Now this is the kind of news you love to read about! I was delighted to learn that I placed in the Branding-Food category of the INTERNATIONAL Indigo Design Awards—the first design competition I’ve ever entered! They exist to promote creativity and innovation in graphic design.

While I won’t be making the trip to the 8th Indigo Winner’s Design Party in Bangkok, Thailand next month, I’m thinking up a lower-key way to celebrate here in my little corner of the world…let me know if you have any ideas.

I’ve tried explaining to people how my brain works before, but unless you can crawl in there, or have a similar noggin, I’m not sure that you can really understand it. As Liz of Waxed Crescent shared her vision for rebranding, the pieces started building in my mind like magic. Instantly, I knew what I wanted to create, and as I was traveling when I received the contract, I took pen to paper and made a rough sketch immediately (this is a little behind-the-scenes peek as I almost never share the sketches).

While I felt confident on the direction, I always present multiple options, but gratefully as the process went on, the winner was clear (I do still love the cheese wedge, also).

We shifted the color, it was requested that many of the food elements be removed, and I explored different type treatments within the circle and outside of it.

My official entry: Waxed Crescent Brand

Taking the owner’s love for celestial, including her titular ‘waxed crescent’ moon, the brand illustrates the physical aspects that make up her offerings: from the top, a goat cheese truffle, rolled in everything spices; to the bottom, a wedge of Manchego cheese, from which her signature greenery grows; then accented by other items to nosh on, like blueberries, strawberries, pistachios and olives. The brand not only illustrates the offerings, but turns into a charcuterie board itself.

I felt so strongly about this design that I wanted it out in the world, and I am beside myself for it to be recognized in this way. Thank you to the esteemed jury (designers from Google, Nike, and on and on) and Indigo, it truly means the world to me.

This project—and the recognition it’s received—is a great example of how I partner with passionate entrepreneurs to bring their brand stories to life through thoughtful design and strategic marketing. I’m currently exploring new opportunities in creative direction, branding, and marketing—full-time and freelance—so if you know someone looking for an experienced creative leader, I’d love an introduction!
